Dreams Burn Down with Moonbell - An Interview

***** Interview with Moonbell *****

Q. When did Moonbel starts, tell us about the history...
Moonbell was started in 2010 in San Francisco, by friends who wanted to combine "transient random noise bursts with announcements" with "a storm in heaven", if that makes any sense. We have 2 EPs (figurine and parallel) that were released as a full length album on Loglady Records (vinyl) and Deep Space Recordings (CD) in 2012. Our new LP is called 'afterlives' and it will be released on Hypnogram! (our own label) on April 1, 2014.

Q: Who are your influences?
Broadcast, Nick McCabe (Verve), The Chameleons, Neu!, The Fall, Kevin Shields, Trans Am, Spacemen 3, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Grouper...

Q. Made a list of 5 albums of all time…
That's hard...
MBV - Isn't Anything,
Yo La Tengo - Electr-o-Pura,
Stone Roses - S/T,
Cocteau Twins - Head Over Heels,
Ride - Smile (EPs)

Q. How do you feel playing alive?
It's the best, it's the reason we do this. Our live performance sounds a bit different than our recordings - faster, more energetic, improvised.

Q. How do you describe Moonbell sounds?
Like a sentimental seance under water. I don't know - we're most interested in how other people experience it, what it reminds them of, etc.. Tell us what you think.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
'afterlives' was recorded and mixed entirely by moonbell, as an experiment to see if we could squeeze more creativity out of the process by taking our time. It has been a great learning experience. Now we write much more collaboratively with all the members contributing... The next recording will focus more on capturing our live energy (minimal overdubs, etc.)

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
the People's Temple, Rites Wild, Total Control

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
A tripped-out version of Felt's "something sends me to sleep".

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Once we release 'afterlives', we have another EP we're going to release in the Summer (from the same 'afterlives' sessions), then hopefully another studio LP. And playing a lot of shows, of course!

Q: Any parting words?
If you dream about playing music or making some other art, do it now and quit wasting time. Creative energy and attitude are so much more important than technical skills and fancy equipment. Kids, make sure you let that sink in.
