Immense Dimension with Chef Menteur - An Interview

***** Interview with Chef Menteur *****

When did Chef Menteur starts tell us about the history...
There are different stories, depending whom you ask. But really, it started with two dudes wanting to do something different than regular punk rock, different from what everybody else in town was doing. Over time members have come and gone... currently it's Alec, Dan, Phil, and Aubrey.

Q: Who are your influences?
This is tricky, especially considering the first question, because each person brings their unique influences... or baggage, as it were. Here's what we collected off the top of our heads... Reich, MBV, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Doc Watson & Clarence Ashley, Cocteau Twins, Einstürzende Neubauten, Simon & Garfunkel, King Tubby, Gordon Lightfoot, Depeche Mode, COIL, Seefeel, Television, early Pink Floyd, The Fall, Fairport Convention, Thelonius Monk, Slowdive, Kraftwerk, Raymond Scott, La Monte Young, Ravi Shankar, Neu, Can, Neil Young (& Crazy Horse), Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Spacemen 3/Spiritualized, Brian Eno, Django Reinhardt, The Chemical Brothers, The Orb, The Stone Roses, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Stars of the Lid, Stereolab, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Black Sabbath, Windy & Carl, James Brown, Talking Heads, The Melvins, The Bee Gees.... and Science/SPACE!!!

Q. Made a list of 5 albuns of all time…
We picked these out of a hat of thousands...

Ravi Shankar Live at Monterey
The Velvet Underground & Nico
Kraftwerk - Die Mensch-Maschine
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol 2
Stars of the Lid - The tired sounds of....

Q. How do you fell playing live?
We seem to like small crowds that know us. people that don't know us don't get it and it's like playing to a wall of oatmeal.

But the few fans that we have that come to our shows—fun times. at times it's like that awkward sentence you spoke to the prettiest girl in class that you can never, ever take back. the most fun show was one we did at sunset on a rooftop in front of a silver Airstream.

Q. How do you describe Chef menteur sounds?
Again, it depends on whoever is involved, but at its core i'd say it's ambient punk influenced with blues and jazz and 70s rock and experimental whatever.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Chef Menteur, album-wise, has always self-recorded... except our latest release. for that we went to a fancy studio that had fancy microphones and fancy rooms. the record before that we spent years recording... so to just go in and get everything on tape within eight hours was refreshing and fun.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Dan:. I like Shabazz Palaces a LOT, and anything by Kool A.D.
Aubrey: Eraas, Grails, The Declining Winter and Conan
Alec: Mountains, Emeralds, Oneohtrix Point Never, Machinedrum, Deepchord.

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
Dan: MC5, "looking at you," is my dream cover.
Aubrey: Joe Meek "I hear a new world"
Alec: "Some Velvet Morning" by Lee Hazelwood

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Rehearsals and "song writing" . . . more recording -- at our own special pace.

Q: Any parting words?
Butter produced by a dairy is significantly better than butter produced by kung fu black belts with little knowledge of dairy related stuff, like dairying. busting boards is not dairying.
