Lifecries with Svankropp - An Interview

***** Interview with Svankropp *****

Q. When did Svankropp start? Tell us about the history…
There’s an intergalactic jazz academy which is rumored to be located in Trondheim. It was there we met as enemies, the harsh weather conditions soon forced us to cooperate which led us to becoming frenemies and eventually friends. As friends we could finally start making music together. The song Lifecries was actually written on our fourth rehearsal in literally four seconds on the fourth floor by all four of us! Imagine that!!!
Q: Who are your influences?

A lot of our inspiration comes from cult movies such as Blade Runner, The Crow, Akira and Ghost in the Shell. Musically it’s a bit hard to pin down, there’s so much. But some names that come to mind are Fever Ray, Deerhoof, Vangelis and Prince.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
John Coltrane- A Love Supreme
The Knife- Silent shout
Prince- Purple Rain
Geinoh Yamashirogumi- Akira
Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We love it. There are not many better things than sharing your music with others through a concert. Sometimes when we need to get our energy levels up we inject pure medical fructose made from Cambodian dragonfruits, those shows are usually the best!

Q. How do you describe Svankropp sounds?
Imagine the feeling of a cocaine stained after party in the 80’s that just died of and someone turned on the lights. In our head it’s one of the moments and we wanted to capture, on one hand there’s a lot of glitter and glamour but if you dig deeper it’s really quite dark...

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We went into the studio with a lot of ideas and some basic shells for the songs and just kinda went on gut feeling.

We are still in the process of defining what our music should sound like so it’s felt right to just experiment with our instruments and the songs.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Connan Mockasin, Bo Ningen, Unknown mortal orchestra, FKA Twigs. Broen, Sun Switch, Kurt Vile.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
We love the song Maniac by Michael Sembello!

Q: What are your plans for the future?
The plan now is to throw our music out into the wild webb and just see the reactions. We have another music video coming out in 2 months and a album later this year. Some shows are booked and were actually already planning for the next record.

Q: Any parting words?
In the words of Prince Rogers Nelson:
“You don't have to be beautiful
To turn me on
I just need your body baby
From dusk till dawn
You don't need experience
To turn me out
You just leave it all up to me
I'm gonna show you what it's all about.”
